What to Include in Your Message

The more relevant detail you provide, the faster and more useful the reply. For most inquiries, please include the following.

  • The page URL — the specific guide on our Site that your message relates to, copy-pasted from your browser address bar
  • The state or topic — for example, “Texas annual report fee” or “California LLC filing”
  • The specific item — what is wrong, what is unclear, or what you would like to know
  • The official source — if you are reporting a correction, a link to the state SOS .gov page or other primary source we should reference
  • Your context — only if relevant, for example “I am a paralegal in Texas” or “I am a journalist covering campaign finance”
  • How you would like to be referenced — if you would prefer to be acknowledged or to remain anonymous in any update we publish
Quick example.

“Hi — your Delaware annual report guide at /delaware-annual-report/ lists the franchise tax minimum at $175 but the official Delaware Division of Corporations site at corp.delaware.gov shows it is now [updated figure]. The page I checked is [URL]. Hope that helps.”

Where We Cannot Help

To set fair expectations, here is what we cannot do, no matter how kindly the request is phrased.

  • State-specific account questions. If you have an account with a state Secretary of State office, a filing in progress, or a notice about your business, we cannot view, modify, or troubleshoot it. You must contact the state office directly using the official phone number or contact form on their .gov website.
  • Filing on your behalf. We are not a registered agent or filing service. We do not submit Articles of Organization, annual reports, UCC filings, or any other document to a state on your behalf.
  • Legal advice. We cannot tell you whether to form an LLC versus a corporation, how to structure a multi-state operation, whether your trademark is registrable, or how to handle a regulatory dispute. These questions require an attorney admitted in your state.
  • Tax advice. We cannot advise on tax classification, Subchapter S election, multi-state nexus, or any tax planning matter. Please consult a CPA or Enrolled Agent.
  • Verifying business legitimacy. We do not vouch for any business that appears in a state search. The state’s records reflect what was filed; commercial due diligence requires a separate process.
  • Resolving disputes with state offices. If you have a complaint about a state office, you can file with the state’s official complaint channel or contact the office of the state attorney general.
  • Election registration assistance. For voter registration questions, please use the official state election website. The NASS directory at nass.org links to every state’s official election site.
Never include sensitive information in an email to us.

Please do not send your Social Security number, EIN, business filing PIN, payment card details, passwords, or any other sensitive information to us by email. We do not need it to help with corrections or feedback, and you should never share it through unsecured channels. Sensitive information should only go to the relevant state office through their secure forms or to a trusted licensed professional.

About Our Operations

secretary-of-states.org/ is a digital-only publication. We do not operate a public office, do not accept walk-in visitors, and do not provide a postal address for general correspondence. All inquiries are handled through email — this lets us respond to messages from anywhere in the United States and keeps overhead low so we can focus on the editorial work.

If a postal address is required for a specific legal or regulatory purpose (for example, a formal legal notice that cannot be served by email), please email us first to request the appropriate address; we will respond and provide the correct route.

Ready to Send Us a Message?
